The Columbia Memorial Space Center is an innovative 20,000 square foot learning center next to the new Discovery Sports Complex in Downey, California. It was built by the city of Downey and its bold shape symbolizes the aspirations and ambitions of space exploration. The building was dedicated on November 15, 2008, and opened on October 23, 2009.


Our Mission

Our goal is to teach young people about careers in space exploration and aviation. We focus on engineering, technology and science. Our subjects include:

  • Human and Robot Space Exploration
  • The Principles of Flight and Aeronautics
  • Current NASA Programs and Technology
  • The Space Shuttle Columbia
  • The Aerospace History of Downey
  • Our Earth and Solar System

  • Space Mission Simulator

    Our Challenger Learning Center is ready for liftoff. Schedule a field trip and fly our Return to the Moon mission or take a Voyage to Mars.
