Have you ever wanted to build and launch a rocket? Come by on Saturday, August 20th for Rocket Fever 2016, here at the CMSC! Experience a full day of great science activities, awesome food trucks, incredible demonstrations, prizes, and of course, rocket launches. Build and decorate a rocket of your very own, then get ready to see it launch into the air. See others launch their own custom rockets* into the air, or take a look at some of the larger rockets created by hobbyists!
*Due to safety reasons, we can only launch rockets with A and B motors only.
Rocketeers of all ages and skills come together for Rocket Fever 2016, Los Angeles’ only urban Rocket Festival, at Columbia Memorial Space Center. Now in its 6th year, the annual celebration of modern model rocketry takes flight on Saturday, August 20, 2016 from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
“Every year this event continues to grow. Its success speaks not only to peoples’ interest in space, but in flight, engineering, technology, robotics, and the sciences in general,” states Ben Dickow, Executive Director of Columbia Memorial Space Center. “Last year we had 1,500 guests. This year we expect more.”
In addition to decorating and launching model rockets, the 20,000 square foot learning center will host other activities including straw, water, and stomp rockets, a cardboard maker space, interactive exhibits, a giant space shuttle jumper, and live music by The Amoeba People. Guests can also participate in an advance rocket class and learn how to build their very own rocket. The advance rocket class fee is $5 and is recommended for ages 8 and above. CMSC will also have food trucks on site.
Through the support of Financial Partners Credit Union, admission is free for the festival. Joining in the day-long festivities are various community organizations and groups including Girls in STEM, Orange County Rocket Society, Discount Rocketry, Mars Society, The Boeing Company, and Planetary Society.

First opened in 2009, the Columbia Memorial Space Center (CMSC) is recognized as the National Memorial to the space shuttle …Columbia and its crew that was lost on STS-107. We are located on the site of the old Boeing/Rockwell/North American plant where all of the Apollo Command/Service Modules were built and the Space Shuttle was conceived.
Today, our mission is to not only preserve the aerospace history of Downey but also to offer programs which inspire younger generations to pursue careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. We have a variety of camps, workshops, and other monthly events to generate interest in STEM in addition to our hands on exhibits, robotics lab, and Challenger Learning Center.
