The Columbia Memorial Space Center is thrilled to announce a major expansion featuring the historic Inspiration space shuttle mock-up. This full-scale shuttle replica will be housed inside a new state-of-the-art, 20,000+ square foot learning complex, designed to enhance the center’s science education programs.
About the Inspiration Shuttle Mock-Up
Originally built in 1972 by Rockwell International, the Inspiration shuttle served as the engineering prototype for NASA's space shuttles. At 122 feet long and 35 feet tall, it played a pivotal role in the development of all orbiters launched into space. After being in storage for over a decade, the shuttle will be restored and displayed in its new home, where the community will have the unique opportunity to explore its cargo bay and learn about Downey’s rich aerospace history.
Help Us Launch the Future of Science!
The Columbia Memorial Space Center has started the Project Inspiration campaign to raise $50 million. This money will help build a new complex, create special exhibits, and develop educational programs to inspire future scientists in Southern California.
